This spring we have been working closely with the Roselle Park District to Curate the Canopy of their community. A few months ago the Roselle Park District announced that their community received federal funding for Emerald Ash Borer Removal and Urban and Community Forestry projects for the upcoming years! We have worked with Lynn McAteer, the Executive Director of the Roselle Park District over the years so we were excited when she reached out to partner with us in this ongoing project. We have been coordinating where the trees will be planted, providing educational materials, and helping organize community involvement days where volunteers come to help assist the plantings.
Their focus will be on removing dead Ash trees, increasing the canopy cover, and diversifying the species mix. Beginning in 2022 the Roselle Park District began planting trees in Gooselake and Chatburg Parks, and this year we will start planting in Engel Park. The SGN Growers worked closely with the Roselle Park District to select a diverse species mix and helped map out where each tree should be planted to ensure success. Last season, the park district staff planted the trees with the help of volunteers. This spring, our family partner business, iTrees.com, assisted in the plantings and coordinated with park volunteers to put the final touches on each tree. The planting day was a great collaboration by everyone involved!
By the end of 2024 we will have planted over 200 trees throughout the community, with a wide array of species such as Oaks, Elms, River Birch, Bald Cypress, Serviceberry, Kentucky Coffeetree, Catalpa, Hackberry, Japanese Tree Lilac, Crabapple, and Weeping Willow. These trees provide incredible environmental, economic, and health benefits to the community, and we are excited to continue our tree planting efforts into 2025 and beyond!
