This month, we’re shining a light on Betula, the birch genus! Betula are known for their distinctive bark and strong seasonal presence. At Spring Grove Nursery, birches play an important role in the landscapes we help shape, offering interest in every season and adaptability across a wide range of planting sites. In spring, their fine-textured leaves emerge early, casting dappled shade. Summer brings habitat for animals and pollinators. Fall turns them a golden-yellow. And winter is when birches truly shine, their bark becoming the main character.
River Birch is known for its exfoliating bark, offering year-round interest and exceptional adaptability. River Birch thrives in moist soils, tolerates heat, and performs well in urban and residential settings alike. It’s a natural choice for larger spaces, wet sites, and landscapes that want texture and movement.
We also grow Heritage River Birch, a refined selection with brighter bark and glossy foliage. It brings the same resilience as River Birch, with an extra level of ornamental polish that designers love.
For tighter spaces or more formal designs, Parkland Pillar Birch and Dakota Pinnacle Birch offer a different feel. With their narrow, upright forms and white bark, they create a strong vertical accent without overwhelming the site. It’s a favorite for streetscapes, courtyards, and landscapes where structure matters just as much as beauty.
Whitespire Birch is a nice narrow pyramidal size with chalky white bark that looks great all season long. The bright green leaves rustle in the wind and turn the brightest yellow in the fall. Another standout feature are the catkins that grace the tree in the summer.
As February unfolds and we prepare for the busy months ahead, birches feel like the perfect tree to pause with. Rooted, resilient, and waiting, just like the rest of the nursery, for spring!
