Each spring, we plant tree liners which get their start in the fields at our nursery suppliers in Oregon. As part of our production schedule, we try to visit these nurseries periodically. On our farm, we are always comparing the quality, size and overall consistency of the newly planted liner crop. Liner quality and consistency make a huge difference when we evaluate how trees finish in our nursery.
At SGN, we plant a variety of tree liner starts: bareroot, bagged or potted. On average these young trees are already 3-6 years old before they arrive for planting on our farm. When we visit our supplier nurseries, we gain insight on each part of the growing process. We also get to see the trees growing in their fields before they are dug, graded and shipped in the spring to our nursery.
This year’s travels to Oregon included 9 nursery tours and a couple of nice hikes near Mt.Hood. My son Joey and I spent the week making our way down the Willamette Valley, visiting farms that were top-notch to say the least. Joey has taken on a role that is integral in the long term vision of Spring Grove Nursery; new liner ordering and inventory manager. He was eager to learn the liner growing process.
From the tissue culture lab at Bailey Nurseries to the large Root Bags at Kuenzi Nursery, we were able to get a great overview of our nursery suppliers. We will keep an eye out for new varieties coming our way and look forward to visiting our Oregon friends again.
