November in the nursery is off to a busy start! The weather has allowed us to be working in the field almost every day. We got a few good rains at the start of the fall season, and we just had another nice soaker the other day. Rain in the fall is essential for plants to have what they need to be ready for the winter ahead. Our trees seem to be well on their way to their winter hibernation – we aren’t there just yet ourselves! Lot of work left to do!
Fall harvest is in full swing. With that comes lots of shipping as well. We have had loads going out daily. Our SGN Team is doing an excellent job preparing the trees for harvest, digging them and staging for pick up or delivery, and finally loading up trucks for customers. Lots of beautiful SGN Trees are ready to grow in their new home in the landscape!
In the field, our new grass filter strips have come in nicely and they are already doing their job to hold our soil in place and provide cover for weeds. When we aren’t digging & loading, we are working on preparing some blocks that we have cleaned up for spring planting. We are also making the final plans for our spring 2023 liner planting. Fall is a great time to reflect on the past growing season, but also a time to look ahead to the next one. We enjoy this transitional time of year at the nursery!
Our SGN Holding Yard is starting to thin out. We still have a good selection of larger B&B trees as well as some smaller container options. Every day, we are tagging & loading up some specimens that we dug last spring so that we could make sure to have them available this fall. Our Oaks, Birch, Red Maples, & Elms are just a few of the varieties we have ready to go.
All of our hard work in the field comes with the daily reward of gorgeous fall colors all around. Seeing the bright yellows, reds, and oranges pop on the horizon or up close is stunning. This is a beautiful time of year to visit the nursery. We invite you to come out to select some trees for this fall, or begin to make your plans for the Spring 2023 season. We have already taken several orders for next year so it’s never too early to plan ahead!
