It’s been a busy month so far at SGN Trees! June is always one of our favorite times in the nursery. The initial spring rush of harvesting, planting, and shipping gets caught up, and we begin to settle into the summer months of growing trees and caring for the farm. The days are long and perfect for growing trees. Some timely rains have come through right when we needed it, so everything is off to a great start growing in the field.
We have been busy in the field working our way through the field tending to necessary tasks. We started by pruning our new liner crop first to make sure everything was cut back as needed and a proper structure is started. We just finished going through the Oak blocks – an important process here at SGN Trees. For more about this visit our latest blog post Growing Oaks at SGN Trees Now that the Oaks are cleaned up, we are moving on to Elms, Hackberry, and Honeylocust next. In between all of those, we have had crews in other ornamental & shade tree blocks working on form and maintenance pruning. Flowers & fruits in the nursery and the landscape have been prolific. We had a bounteous Serviceberry fruit crop this year in the field, and we even harvested some to try a Serviceberry crisp. It was delicious!
Tending to the farm also starts to gear up in June. We are on to spraying, mowing, weeding, and general farm clean up. The soybean cover crop we planted in May is up and growing – along with the sweet corn out in front of the office for SGN customers & crew. We continue to ship daily from our SGN Holding Yard. Everything in the sales yard looks fresh & healthy – one of our best crops ever!
Summer is a perfect time to visit the nursery. The trees are all putting on tremendous growth this year and it is a great time to see the foliage mid-season. We invite you to come out anytime so a private tour. Check out our Gather at the Grove program for more info about a formalized visit with your team: Gather at the Grove
Of note this month are Catalpas & Lindens. These native beauties are on full display this spring with their June blooms. For more about some these awesome trees, check out a few recent posts we wrote:
