The Society of Municipal Arborists has announced it’s 2010 Urban Tree of the Year – Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud). This adaptable tree won the votes of arborists, foresters, & green industry professionals from around the country. Trees chosen must prove to be hardy & adaptable to a wide range of conditions throughout the country. The tree species must also have strong ornamental traits.
The Eastern Redbud is hardy to USDA Zone 4b. It put on a showy early spring display of purple/pink flowers along the stems. The leaves are an attractive heart-shape & turn yellow in the fall. The branches mature with a horizontal structure giving the tree great architectural interest. The mature size is about 25′ tall by 30′ wide.
