It’s a beautiful day to Gather at the Grove! Today our farm hosted the @compeerfinancial New Team Member Experience Day where new employees learned more about Compeer, the customers they service and partner with, and about our operations at Spring Grove Nursery, @itreeschicago and Harford Farms. We had a blast learning, sharing, and networking together. @hufendickfarmmarket_ food truck served up delicious Wagyu brisket and burgers before we finished out the day with a walking tour of the nursery. We showcased our new solar panels, soybean cover crops, soil health, pruning demonstrations, holding yard operations, and digging a tree in real-time. Thank you to @compeerfinancial for coming out today and supporting our family farm over the years - we value our partnership and look forward to continuing to grow a legacy for years to come!

Caring for our soil is a top priority on this 6th

Caring for our soil is a top priority on this 6th generation farm. Our nursery grows on a farm with a long history of no-till methods, and it is important to us to keep up this tradition and conservation practice.

Every September, we plant grass strips into our new tree crop blocks. We leave the grass strips in place for several years while the trees are growing. After the entire block is harvested we will clean it up and plant a cover crop of soybeans for a year and let the soil rest. We harvest the soybeans, which while growing, will add nitrogen back in to the soil. The following season, our new block is ready to plant without any additional tillage needed.

Having soil that is not continually tilled allows for high organic matter content to be built up in the soil. The grass strips & soybean cover crops also help hold our soil in place from wind and rain erosion. Our soil is one of our most important natural resources here at the nursery, so taking care of it is something we take very seriously. We will be proud to pass this ground on to the next generation. Joey is heading up the planting this fall and he got off to a great start today. Now we just need some rain!

Perfect tree planting weather this week! Our SGN Team is working on hand planting our new baby evergreens into our field. We like late summer planting for evergreens, they tend to transplant well this time of year (late Aug, Sept, early Oct). This year we are planting a nice mix of Spruce, Pine, and Arborvitae all coming from some of our favorite partner growers at Sester Farms & Evergreen Nursery.
