Spring is almost here, and on the farm you can feel the energy building as we prepare for the chaos of the Spring. From our crew returning to work, to baby trees shipping in, to digging and shipping our SGN trees out to our community partners there is never a dull moment in the month of March!
Welcome Back to our Crew
Our local and H2A crews are returning to work at the nursery and we are excited to hit the ground running. We have a seasoned crew who have been with us for multiple seasons, and we are so appreciative of their hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm they bring to SGN. Our crews are essential to every harvest, planting, and field prep task that defines this time of year!
Planting Prep
March also marks the arrival of trees we’ve been anticipating for months. We’re receiving liners from our trusted supplier nurseries in Oregon to be planted and grow in our fields for the next 3-8 years. You can read more about their nursery operations on our blog. Our team is also hard at work planning out where every new tree will get planted. Taking into consideration growth rate, species, space available each tree finds their perfect spot in our fields.
Dig Season
One of the most exciting jobs in March is digging trees before they leaf out. Precision and timing are everything in this process: when trees are still dormant or just on the brink of budding out is the ideal window to harvest field-grown trees that will go on to thrive. Digging before the trees bud out reduces stress on the tree, and our crews watch the weather closely to make sure that each tree gets dug at the right time.
There’s a distinct rhythm to this time of year. We move fast, are quick to adapt to the weather, and communicate constantly with each other and our customers and partners to make sure that each tree finds success in its new home. Springtime always brings us a renewal of our connection to nature and to each other. Our family and business are interconnected to each other, to the land we steward, and to the communities in which we live and our trees grow.
We are so grateful to be growing healthy trees, deep roots, and strong communities!
