Zach and I returned home from @youramericanhort’

Zach and I returned home from @youramericanhort’s Cultivate conference last month filled with fresh ideas, familiar connections, and a spark of creativity that only comes from gathering with others who love plants and people as much as we do!

This year, one of our biggest takeaways was inspiration through community. Whether it was a quick catch-up between education sessions, a deep-dive conversation over lunch, or gathering with friends over a delicious dinner we found so much value in simply being around others who are committed to growing this industry together. We especially loved connecting with our @landscapeillinois friends and our friend and neighbor down the road, Sarah at @sunshinegardencenter! Sometimes it takes meeting up at a conference a few states away to really get some time to hang out! Conversations like those are where ideas begin to bloom.

Happy August! We are so excited to talk about our new Tree of the Month: Elm

Once seen everywhere on American streetscapes, Elm trees were nearly wiped out by Dutch Elm Disease in the 20th century. But thanks to decades of dedicated breeding, they’re back and stronger than ever.

At Spring Grove Nursery, we grow resilient selections that bring the beauty of classic elms with the strength to thrive in modern landscapes.

🌳 Ulmus americana ‘Jefferson’ – Named for the National Mall’s beloved elms
🌳 Ulmus americana ‘Princeton’ – A fast-growing survivor planted since the 1920s
🌳 Ulmus japonica × pumila ‘New Horizon’ – Upright and tough
🌳 Ulmus japonica × wilsoniana ‘Morton’ – Known as ‘Accolade®’, this one does great in urban settings
🌳 Ulmus japonica × wilsoniana × pumila ‘Morton Glossy’ – Shiny leaves with strong structure

🌿 Fun Fact: In ancient mythology, the elm tree symbolized victory, endurance, and shelter. In real life, Elms host over 200 species of moths and butterflies, including the Mourning Cloak and Question Mark butterflies. Their flowers, which appear before the leaves, are an early-season pollen source for native bees. Plus, Insectivorous birds (like chickadees and warblers) forage in elms for caterpillars and other soft-bodied insects.

We’re closing out July with one last spotlight o

We’re closing out July with one last spotlight on Catalpa, our 🌳 Tree of the Month. In fact, we love them so much we just added one to our landscape here at the nursery. We planted a Heartland Catalpa in front of our office, and it’s doing GREAT!

The straight species of Catalpa are fast-growing and can reach heights of 40–70 feet, making them a popular choice when quick shade or scale is needed in the landscape. Their large, heart-shaped leaves create a broad canopy that fills in fast.

Catalpas are also incredibly tough! They handle poor soils, drought, pollution, and urban conditions without missing a beat.

Their resilience and visual appeal aren’t new discoveries. As Michele Micetich shared about The Catalpa Canopy of Carbon Hill:

“As was common at the time, catalpa trees were the craze. Known for shade, twisted trunks and limbs, and useful as railroad ties or fence posts, they were capable of withstanding big winds while providing showy white blooms, interesting seed pods, and eerie winter shapes.”

A true workhorse with a ton of wild charm.
