We like to say that at Spring Grove Nursery, we grow healthy trees, deep roots, and strong communities. Participating in planting projects, especially ones that are volunteer-led, is one of our favorite things to do! We are able to get connected to the communities in which our trees are planted and help cultivate that connection with local tree enthusiasts; connection to the land, to each other, and to a shared vision of their parks and hometown that will grow and thrive for generations to come.

We joined volunteers at the Roselle Park District, shovels in hand and smiles on faces. Neighbors came with gloves, and the park district staff welcomed everyone. One by one, trees were laid out across the park and given a new home in the soil. White Oak, Swamp White Oak, Red Jewel Crabapple, and Jefferson American Elm was the palette carefully chosen to beautify Chatburg Park!

Roselle Park District has been planting SGN trees these past few years and their commitment to shade, beauty, and resilience for the next generation of Roselle families is commendable.

October is one of our favorite times of year at the Nursery! Fall has arrived and we are in full swing with tree tagging appointments, digging, shipping, and planting. Much like Spring, Fall is its own special kind of chaos; our heads are on a swivel and there are so many moving parts, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Oaktober Spotlight: Who’s Planting 🌳 Oaks (and Why It Matters)

One of the most interesting things we see during Oaktober is the wide range of people planting Oaks, and we love it!

🌳 Municipalities & Public Spaces:
Most of our oak sales go to municipalities, where we work closely with foresters and public works teams to assess tree canopy health and diversify species lists. Oaks are always part of the conversation because of their strength, longevity, and ecological value.

🏡 Homeowners & Ecological Landscapes:
Homeowners who plant Oaks are often tuned into their environmental impact, choosing them to support pollinators, birds, and wildlife. While some worry about acorn drop, there are cultivars like Urban Pinnacle bred for smaller acorns. And for those who embrace them, acorns 🌰 are a vital food source for local wildlife!

🌱 Landowners & Long-Term Projects:
We’re also seeing more landowners planting Oaks for reforestation and agroforestry projects. Practices like silvopasture use Oaks for both shade and soil health. Livestock like sheep and pigs forage for acorns, while the fallen leaves enrich the soil as organic matter.

Oaks always make our shortlist for their unmatched ecological and environmental benefits.

We’re excited to share that Spring Grove Nursery and @itreeschicago will be co-hosting the fall meeting of 100+ Women Who Care of Grundy County right here at the nursery! 🌿

This amazing giving circle brings together women from across our community to make a big impact without a big time commitment.

Here’s how it works:
💛 Each woman (or team) contributes $100 per gathering.
💛 Each $100 gets one nomination for a local charity.
💛 Three nominations are randomly chosen to give a 2-minute pitch.
💛 Members vote and all collected funds go to the winning charity!
