Our farm is in full bloom, and the bees and butter

Our farm is in full bloom, and the bees and butterflies are buzzing with excitement. During the spring and summer months we see lots of pollinator activity here on the farm, from the trees in our fields to the garden and flowers at our home. Pollinator Week is coming up, June 16-22, and we wanted to highlight some interesting info about how trees encourage healthy pollination and improve the native landscape!

@pollinatorpartnership has a wealth of information on their website and Instagram about pollinators, raising awareness about bee health, monarch migration, safe farming practices and so much more! Pollinators play a vital role in sustaining our ecosystems, helping plants reproduce, accounting for the growth of around 1200 crops, meaning that every 1 out of 3 bites of food you eat is because of pollinators. Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and bees are all important pollinators to attract to the native landscape. Unfortunately, pollinator populations are shifting or declining, so we should work towards creating landscapes, yards, and gardens that support healthy pollination!

We had so much fun hosting Illinois Valley Industries to the farm last week! We enjoyed a Tuesday lunch break in the woods with our IVI Friends and our SGN Team. Nature walk to the Troll Tree, leaf rubbing, tree planting, hot dogs, s’mores… it was a perfect start to the summer! The month of June is just beginning here at the nursery! In the field we have crews split between pruning, staking, and weeding. The weather this season has been beautiful so far!

Here is a video clip of our staking machine in action over the last few years. Becky’s Dad built this custom staking add-on to our tractor. It has staked thousands of trees over the years for us and works perfectly for what we need!
