The nursery is growing along nicely as the summer sets in! Timely rains coupled with some good heat help the trees push along on their new growth.  Our summer field work of pruning & staking is going well. We are very happy with the structure & growth that is coming on our new crop of trees in the field.  This time of year we start to get caught up on our spraying, cultivating & mowing. The nursery is starting to take shape and it’s nice to see the fields looking healthy & clean!

Pictured here are some State Street Maples coming on for next year. The crops in the field have never looked better. We are very excited about what we will find when we start a new count & measure in August!

We welcome you to stop by the nursery for a visit. It’s a great time of year to see the trees we have growing for the future!

As we harvest trees this spring from the field, we promptly bring them into our Holding Yard. Once in the yard, they are placed on drip irrigation. Throughout the season, we will ship trees that are fresh and ready to go on your projects. As we progress through the spring digging season, the trees available in our Holding Yard changes daily.

So what’s in our yard so far? Lots of spring blooms! All deciduous trees are now in the Holding Yard and ornamentals are in full bloom. Here are some recent pics:

With clear sunny weather ahead we are in the final stages of digging & loading in the nursery!

We hope to wrap up deciduous digging by the end of this week. As we are digging, we are also bringing in trees from the field to our loading area and our holding yard. Once those trees are in from the field, we will start evergreen digging. The recent cold temps slowed us up a bit as we needed to wait for certain species to be ready to dig. But the warm up seems to be here to stay, and the spring field work is going well. We actually wouldn’t mind some more rain now to settle in our newly planted trees!

Pictured here are some beautiful Red Maples in from the field and ready to bud out. We have a fantastic selection of trees in our above ground holding yard ready to ship. Spring is in the air!

If you have projects coming up that you need trees for this spring, now is the time to get your order in. Please don’t hesitate to call. Thanks & have a great spring!

One of our liner suppliers, J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Oregon said it first… Trees are the Answer! And we couldn’t agree more!

Trees really are the answer, and as Green Industry professionals it is our job to make sure our customers and our community knows that!  There are many ways to share the great news about the benefits of trees to our communities.  We put together a few resources that we often share.  Click below for links to some pdf files that you are welcome to use & share:

We also put together a fun video slideshow of some of our tree plantings with kids over the years. Check out  our ARBOR DAY VIDEO for a look at some of our plantings.  We made the video on animoto.com. Videos are really easy to make on their site & cost only $3! If you are looking for a way to share photos from some of your community events or to showcase tree projects, that website is a great resource.

Another great local resource in Illinois is the Morton Arboretum.  We found lots of great tree facts & links on their website – check it out at http://www.mortonarb.org/learn-experience/educators/arbor-day-classroom

Finally, the official “Trees are the Answer” people at J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Oregon have a great website full of tree info – check it out at www.jfschmidt.com/treesaretheanswer/

However you choose to celebrate the year, have fun & Happy Arbor Day!

Even though supply is tight this season, we have a terrific selection of trees available! Our availability is limited on certain varieties & sizes, however with over 1500 trees to choose from we are certain that you can find the trees you need for your projects.

We still have a good selection of Shade, Ornamental, & Evergreen Trees.  Hard to find trees like 2.0-3.0″ Maples are still in good supply on our list. In addition, we have a diverse selection of specimen trees for you to choose from.  Now is a great time to get your order in!

As the temps continue to warm up, the dig window will begin to close on certain trees. Sometimes we might have the tree available to dig even if it isn’t showing on our availability. Don’t hesitate to call or email us a list if there is something you need that you are having a hard time finding. We will double check our field numbers to see if we can find it for you.  Once the dig window closes this spring on a species, if we do not have extra above ground, we will list the next season that we can dig that variety.

In coming weeks there will be more trees available on our list as we pull them in from the field. Many times we end up digging a few extra here & there to clear out a block. Until those come into the Holding Yard for sure, it’s a bit of a guessing game on exact numbers. Our Holding Yard will be well stocked with a great selection soon.

We appreciate the opportunity to work with you this season!

Digging 2018

We have some fantastic fresh new trees in the field this spring! Some of the new varieties that we will be digging this spring are:  Heritage River Birch, Turkish Filbert, Worplesdon Sweetgum, Slender Silhouette Sweetgum, White Shield Osage Orange, Ruby Vase Parrotia, Pink Flair Cherry, Scarlet Letter Oak and Jack Pear.

We also have a great new crop of liners to plant this spring. Some new varieties we are excited to be trying out are Spaeth’s Alder, Emerald Avenue Pyramidal Hornbeam, Fire King American Hornbeam, Heartland Catalpa, Red Fox Katsuratree, True North Kentucky Coffeetree, Sparkling Sprite Crababpple… just to name a few.

Supply is tight this season due to increased demand in the market. But don’t worry – we still have a great supply of trees available yet this spring! We will also be planting a full crop into the field as we have continued to do every year. Our consistent planting schedule over the years insures our customers that we can supply their tree needs each season. With greater demand however, early ordering & long range planning will be a good way to make sure we have the trees ready in the season you need them.

We look forward to working with all of our customers to grow excellent quality trees for many years to come!

New Trees for Spring

Out in the field things are starting to shape up for spring! We are working these next few weeks to finish tagging spring orders. In this pic, Jamie is tagging State Street Maples, Exclamation London Planetree & Redpointe Red Maples for some customers. We have an excellent crop of trees ready to harvest this spring. Our early sales are strong, but we still have lots of great trees to choose from. Check out our latest availability and place your order today to get on our dig list: SGN Availability

The equipment is all tuned up & ready to roll. Our liner orders are set to come in late March.  We are planning to start digging the week of March 12 if the weather cooperates. There is still time to come out to the nursery & tag an order. Please give us a call if you are ready to pick out some trees for your spring projects.

Next time we check in we should have lots more field activity to report!

Spring Tagging

Fall colors have finally decided to burst on the scene here in the nursery! The late summer warm temps with dry weather pushed fall dormancy back a bit on the calendar. We saw a delay in the field of trees going into dormancy which pushed back the start of fall digging. However, with a few nice rains and cooler temps these past few weeks, we finally were able to get in the swing of fall work. We are working hard to dig fall orders and load & deliver to customers. Hopefully the late arrival of this beautiful fall weather will not mean a quick arrival of winter! Time will tell…

Fall colors are at a peak in the nursery. Stop by for a visit!

Firebird Crabapple Blooms
Firebird Crabapple Blooms

It’s been a busy time in the field these past few weeks! Here is a re-cap of what we have been up to:

PLANTING – All of our new trees have been planted into the field. We received a beautiful crop of trees this year & got them all in the ground within days of receiving them last month. They have benefited from some nice rains to settle them in. We are now starting to go through & do the first initial pruning & structure work. At the same time we will be re-straightening & stomping to get them firmly where they need to be in the ground for the next few years while they grow.

DIGGING – We have finished digging for the spring. All of the freshly dug trees have been pulled in from the field & where they need to be. We dug a fantastic crop this spring & are already making plans for our next dig season this fall.

HOLDING YARD – Our Holding Yard is fully stocked with trees ready to ship for upcoming projects all season. Everything has been pulled in from the field & is now set up on drip irrigation. Please check out our availabilty if you are looking for trees this season!

SHIPPING – We have been loading out hundreds of trees daily these last few weeks. Everything has been going smoothly & we are happy to see our trees getting where they need to be for the season!

FIELD WORK – Our other spring field work is next on the list! We will begin mowing, cultivating, & spraying soon. Our guys will be starting to work on pruning & staking shortly as well. There is no shortage of work to do this time of year!

With clear sunny weather ahead we are in full swing of digging, loading and planting in the nursery! We were able to get our new crop of liners planted over several days last week. Click here for more about our 2017 Tree Planting.

We hope to wrap up deciduous digging by the end of this week. As we are digging, we are also bringing in trees from the field to our loading area and our holding yard. Once those trees are in from the field, we will start evergreen digging. The rains earlier this month slowed us up a bit, but it has dried out nicely now and the spring field work is going well. We actually wouldn’t mind some more rain now to settle in our newly planted trees!

Pictured here are some beautiful Eastern Redbud in full bloom. We have a nice selection of ornamentals flowering now like Ornamental Pear, Witchhazel, Serviceberry, and Little Twist Cherry. Spring is in the air!

If you have projects coming up that you need trees for this spring, now is the time to get your order in. Please don’t hesitate to call. Thanks & have a great spring!
